Your Questions,
What is the difference between a coach and a therapist?
Mental health coaches are non-licensed professionals with a clinical background who partner with individuals to assist with identifying and building on strengths and navigating everyday stressors. Unlike licensed clinicians, mental health coaches do not diagnose Therapists focus on addressing the root causes of mental health issues.
Coaches focus on helping individuals navigate current challenges and find creative solutions to move toward their goals.
What tools do you use?
I use a blend of somatic inquiry and body-based resourcing. Participants learn to listen to the body in real time as a way of being with emotion rather than resisting or trying to ignore it. This is a form of strength training for the nervous system. Tuning into bodily sensations, movements, and patterns. This may involve various somatic exercises, such as:
- Attention to the breath and /or movement
- Mindfulness practices
- Body scans
- Reflective dialogue and inquiry
What training or education have you received?
I’m a Nationally Certified Mental Health and Addiction Interventionist and a Certified Life Coach. In the past 5 years, I completed a year-long small group training with supervision in resourcing and somatic inquiry with Julianne Eanniello. I’ve studied and taken courses created by Dr Gabor Maté, Peter Levine and Joe Dispenza. Attended an experiential training circle on creating and holding sacred space in a 9-month program with Ana Medina, a curandera and student of Christiane Pelmas, creator of the Verdant Collective. Studied Polyvagal Theory with HeartMind Resiliency. I spent three years in weekly supervision studying somatic interventions, psychodrama and group dynamics. I’m also a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist.
What can I expect to be different?
A deeper awareness of the connection between the emotional, physical and mental processes that occur throughout our day. Clients will learn to listen to the wisdom of the body and integrate this into their daily decision-making and activities. Increased emotional intelligence, feeling more in control of your own emotions and responses to situations, and tools to help you feel more grounded and centered.
